What to do in a dental emergency

First steps for a knocked-out tooth, a broken tooth or a painful swelling, and when to call.

A family at a dental visit

Some dental issues require urgent treatment. Infections and trauma are examples where patients benefit from quick treatment. Here is what to do while you get in touch.

Knocked-out tooth

Pick the tooth up by the crown, not the root. Rinse it gently without scrubbing, keep it moist in milk, and call the office straight away. Time matters.

Broken or chipped tooth

Rinse your mouth with warm water, keep any pieces, and use a cold compress on the outside of your face if there is swelling.

Toothache or swelling

Rinse with warm water and gently floss in case something is caught. Call the office. If swelling spreads, or you have trouble breathing or swallowing, go to the emergency room.
